Can You Jumpstart an Automatic Car?
Yes, you can jumpstart an automatic car. The process is similar to jumpstarting a manual transmission vehicle, but there are a few essential things to remember to ensure you do it safely and effectively.

Steps to Jumpstart an Automatic Car

  1. Safety First: Before you begin, make sure both vehicles are parked in a safe location away from traffic. Turn off both cars and engage the parking brakes. Ensure that both cars have compatible voltage systems (most cars have 12-volt systems).
  2. Locate the Battery: Open the hoods of both cars and locate the batteries. In some vehicles, the battery might be in the trunk or under a seat, so consult your owner’s manual if you’re unsure.
  3. Identify the Terminals: Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries. The positive terminal is usually red and marked with a plus sign, while the negative terminal is black and marked with a minus sign.
  4. Connect the Jumper Cables:
    • Attach one end of the red (positive) jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
    • Connect the other end of the red (positive) cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
    • Attach one end of the black (negative) jumper cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
    • Finally, connect the other end of the black (negative) cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or chassis of the car with the dead battery. This acts as a ground and reduces the risk of sparks near the battery.
  5. Start the Engine: Start the engine of the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery. Then, try starting the car with the dead battery. If it starts, let both cars run for a few minutes to build up a charge in the dead battery.
  6. Disconnect the Jumper Cables: Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order of how you connected them:
    • Remove the black (negative) cable from the engine block or chassis of the previously dead car.
    • Remove the black (negative) cable from the negative terminal of the good battery.
    • Remove the red (positive) cable from the positive terminal of the good battery.
    • Remove the red (positive) cable from the positive terminal of the previously dead battery.
  7. Keep the Engine Running: After jumpstarting, keep the engine running for at least 15-20 minutes or take the car for a drive to allow the alternator to recharge the battery fully.
